To the same point, I'm more offended by the message the Barbie McDonald's Fun Time "Restaurant" Playset sends... Even still, don't buy it if you don't like it.

Thanks so much for commenting. You make a really great point about sugary cereals and fast food. Far more harmful messaging for kids than a Barbie doll and more pervasive, too.

I may not be in the main stream here but a few years back I was hoping for the Syd and Nancy collection, needles and pins included. Kidding aside, it's amazing to me that people still can't accept the things they see in their every-day life portrayed in mass media or, in this case toys. People and have tattoos and piercings, use swear words, and have real body parts (I watched that infamous Super Bowl wardrobe malfunction with my then nine year old and he said " what's the big deal?" The S&M costumes were worse than what she showed underneath), If your kid sees Barbie with a tattoo and wants one the parent should just say "no." It may actually turn teens off to tattoos; once it hits Barbie it is "so over." Meanwhile, it's acceptable for things that are truly harmful to your children to be featured all the time without much complaint: sugary cereals, fast food, etc. If Mattel is willing to let Barbie grow up a little maybe parents should grow up a little too.

Seriously! I'd rather spend 49-cents on a generic card of encouragement and put in a personal pick-me-up and give it to my friend when I take her/him out for a $3 Starbucks. I'm not spending nearly 4-bucks (with tax) plus another $0.44 for postage (taking me up to almost $5!) to cheer up my friend. If I'm spending $0.44 to send a card I'll slip in $4 and say have a coffee on me. And I'll write it on the back of scratch paper and the sentiment will still be there.

I appreciate what Hallmark is trying to do. But the phrase 'falling flat' really comes to mind.

Bonnie,

I really like YOUR idea -- too bad you don't consult for Hallmark. Really, it's a brilliant idea. I agree they missed the mark; their gut instinct meters must have been broken during that brainstorm session!
