The question of discrimination, whether it be gender, religious or racial, is a delicate one. It is a question that can either fan the flames of existing tension or it can lead to thoughtful discussion of the issues.
In this piece, Syracuse law professor Kevin Noble Maillard draws on his legal expertise and personal experience as a member of the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma to ask the question, “Was the Cherokee Nation’s expulsion of of black Freedman an act of tribal sovereignty or racial discrimination?”
This is Professor Maillard’s third contribution to The New York Times in as many months. His personal family photographs are featured as well.
